Comparison of Enhanced and Manual Urinalysis for Detecting Urinary Tract Infections in Children

Background: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are among the most common bacterial in children. Urinalysis (UA) is a beneficial test for preliminary diagnosis of UTIs. The presence bacteriuria UA can be determined by either an enhanced (using uncentrifuged Gram-stained specimens) or manual centrifuged technique. However, diagnostic performance not well-established childhood Objectives: To assess ability and automated urinalysis to detect UTIs Methods: This cross-sectional study was conducted on 191 children with symptoms UTI referred Dr. Sheikh Hospital, Mashhad, Iran, from 2018 2019. Standard urinalysis, quantitative urine culture were performed specimens. A positive defined as ≥ 10 white blood cells per mL any bacteria high-power microscopic fields smear. 5 field. results standard compared findings determine accuracy these two methods detecting Sensitivity, specificity, predictive value (PPV), negative (NPV) each test. Results: showed that prevalence 23%. Enhanced retrieved sensitivity 97.7%, specificity 93.1%, PPV 81.1%, NPV 99.3% In UA, sensitivity, PPV, 90.9%, 80.7%, 57.1%, 96.6% pyuria, 56.8%, 98.6%, 92.5%, 88.4% nitrite test, 72.7%, 94.5%, 80%, 92% leukocyte esterase respectively. Conclusions: had higher than UA.
